The film describes the relationship between a father and his two motherless sons in Ireland, and how it changes when their aunt from London arrives.

In 1945, the Carlions assemble at an English country house for a family gathering. During the event, they must determine who is to take over the family brewing empire, since the present head of the business, Sir Frederick, is getting old. The results of the 1945 general election causes a major stir, and some angry farmers occupy a barn.

He is also unimpressed with his daughter's choice of a husband. Ted's brother is a sales representative for Datsun cars - something else which incurs Ted's disgust, as he feels that his brother should only deal with Kingswood Holden cars.
